A GOKWE woman who squashed her seven months old baby between her legs, leading to the child’s death was this Tuesday spared jail on grounds of insanity.
Evelyne Zaina, 31, of village Misihairambwi under Chief Chireya, Gokwe North killed her seven months’ old daughter by locking her between her legs.
Bulawayo High Court judge, Justice Martin Makonese, acquitted Zaina on the grounds of insanity before sending her to Mlondolozi prison for further examination and treatment.
Prosecutors told the court that on November 3, 2015 at around 8pm, Zaina’s mother Jessina Makaya put up in accused’s room since she (Zaina) had exhibited unusual behaviour for the whole of that day.
Zaina slept on one side of the room while Makaya and the deceased put up on the other side of the room.
At around 3am, the following morning Makaya was awakened by her husband so they could go for morning prayers and that is when she (Makaya) discovered the baby was no longer by her side.
“She then lit a torch and observed the tot locked between the accused’s legs,” prosecutors told the court.
“With the help of her (Makaya) husband, the two removed the toddler from Zaina’s legs and discovered that she was already lifeless.”
The matter was reported to the police leading to Zaina’s arrest.
