GWERU – A Zanu PF supporter, last week, left the court in stitches when he told the magistrate that he stole potatoes to raise money to buy beer as he couldn’t think clearly without taking alcohol.
Blessing Dikwindi of Mkoba 10 stole $15 worth of potatoes which he sold for $4 to buy beer to quench his thirst.
Dikwindi, 38, told the court that he cannot think properly when in a sober sense hence his “desperation for alcohol.”
“Your Worship, I stole the potatoes to buy beer because I cannot think properly when in a sober sense,” said Dikwindi.
Magistrate, Shotgame Musaiona, however, sentenced Dikwindi to 15 days in jail but suspended 10 days on condition that he pays $15 restitution to the complainant. A further five days were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Prosecuting, Memory Chitsunge told the court that on October 16, at around 10pm, Dikwindi stole a pocket of potatoes from a house in Mkoba 1 suburb.
He then sold the potatoes for $4, money which he used to buy beer.
But a neighbour who had seen Dikwindi stealing the potatoes informed the complainant, Andrew Musona, who, in turn, made a police report leading to the thief’s arrest.
