Chinamasa should resign over salary delay- PDP

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by the former Finance Minister Tendai Biti has called for the Minister of Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa to resign over the failure to pay salaries on time.

The cash strapped government is currently failing to pay salaries for the month of July, with the Ministry yet to give out dates for the payment of government workers.

What has even shocked many is the fact that even the military who are often given preferential treatment are yet to get their salaries.

The meeting held between the government and its worker representatives this afternoon failed to produce any results with the government only promising it will give the date for salary payment by Friday.

The former Finance Minister’s political party had however, hit at the ZANU PF government for its failure to mobilize resources.

“ Chinamasa must resign over failure to pay civil servants,” said Biti.

“The failure by the Zanu PF government to pay civil servants’ salaries for two consecutive months of June and July 2016 is unacceptable and gross violations of the rights of the civil servants,” added the PDP statement sent by Biti.

The party led by the top Harare lawyer said what the ruling party was doing was akin to modern day slavery and therefore against the country’s supreme law.

“Section 54 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe makes it clear that no person must be subjected to slavery and servitude,” said the top lawyer.

The party went on to add that it was unconstitutional for the government to neglect the payment of worker’s salaries.
“That same Constitution in Section 65 states that everyone has a right to be paid a fair and reasonable wage,” added the former treasury boss.

‘Therefore, civil servants are entitled to their salaries. t is clear to us that the failure by government to pay civil servants is a result of self-induced policy distortions that have crippled this economy,” added the statement.
