Former Chief of Staff in President’s Office Dies


Harare – LONG serving and trusted President Robert Mugabe aide, former Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Charles Utete, has died.

According to reports, Utete collapsed at his Harare home and died on Friday morning.

Reports said senior government officials had confirmed the development.

Utete retired from government in 2003 having joined in 1981 as secretary to Prime Minister and cabinet. He was to become secretary to the president and cabinet in 1987 following the introduction of the executive presidency.

He held the position for 23 years.

Utete was to become Chairperson of the Presidential Land Review Commission in charge of assessing the land grab exercise.

He was also chairman of Cairns Holdings and a nonexecutive director at Astra Industries. He also chaired the Industrial Development Corporation and Seed Co Zimbabwe.

Utete was also former Zimpapers chairman.
