HARARE – Peter Moyo’s unprofessional conduct in showbiz continues to hog the limelight, the Kwekwe-based musician went offside again on Sunday and shortchanged fans after failing to turn up for a family show at Spillway Pub and Restaurant.
The musician opted to perform at his church, Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries, while fans were waiting for him at the Lake Chivero resort. The Spillway show was advertised for more than a week, but Moyo reacted to a short notice call-up for a performance at PHD and disappointed fans, most of whom had brought their families in anticipation of a fun-filled Sunday at the lake.
It seems confusion in the musician’s management also contributed to the blunder since members of the camp are giving different explanations to the development.
While the musician claims they cancelled the show early last week and communicated with venue owners, his manager Sukol Dube confirmed the show was cancelled on the eleventh hour after the band was tasked to perform at PHD. The other manager Pliers Puraene says every development was properly communicated to concerned parties.
Spillway Pub and Restaurant manager Dzikama Rufu said Moyo is not being sincere in claiming they had officially cancelled the show way before Sunday. He said there was no communication and they were surprised by the musician’s failure to fulfill his assignment.
“They acted in an unprofessional manner. We were expecting them to come and perform but I got worried in the late afternoon when no one from their group came to prepare for the show. I was expecting them to set up their sound system by 12noon, but no one came. I tried to call them and no one was picking my calls,” said Rufu.
“As time went on, fans that had come got impatient and we had to tell them that the show had been cancelled, but there was still no communication from Peter and his guys. Up to Friday last week, we were communicating and they had actually been given flyers to distribute at their other shows and everything seemed perfect. We advertised the show for more than a week and we incurred losses. Up to now, they are avoiding me and they have not explained what happened.”
Dube said they cancelled the show because of the PHD assignment.
“We thought Peter would just go alone to church as usual and later come for the Spillway show, but we were told on the day that the whole band had to go to PHD. We went to church as a band and we failed to go to the other show because of time. I admit there was communication breakdown and organisers of Spillway show did not know what was happening. We will talk to them for another arrangement,” said Dube.
On the other hand, Moyo claims everything was done professionally.
“We cancelled that show early last week after realising that Sulu (Suluman Chimbetu) who was initially supposed to be part of the event had another assignment. We agreed with Sulu that the show would be held later and I believe my managers communicated the development. We are now planning to have the show when we return from our regional tour,” said Moyo.
However, Sulu’s publicist Joe “Local” Nyamungoma said they had not had any arrangement with Moyo to postpone the show since they were made to understand he would proceed with the gig when they pulled out.
He was surprised Moyo had not gone for the show.
Moyo has been on spotlight for the wrong reasons over the past months due to mismanagement that has torn his Utakataka Express band apart.
