MASOSHENI farm residents in Richmond, KZN Midlands, are living in fear of being killed – by baboons!
This after a baboon attacked and seriously injured two kids on Saturday.
Seluleko Xaba (6) is fighting for his life at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg after he and a cousin, Sinethemba Mkhize (10) were attacked by a baboon.
The kids were sent by their madala, Bhekifa Xaba (60) to look for a horse on the farm. Bhekifa told Daily Sun the kids were a few metres from the house when they heard them screaming.
He said everyone rushed to the kids’ aid when they saw a big baboon biting Seluleko. They chased the baboon away and rushed Seluleko to Richmond Clinic, from where he was transferred to hospital due to the serious nature of his injuries. Bhekifa told the People’s Paper the baboon bit Sinethemba in the thigh, but she managed to escape.
“We live in fear!
“We appeal to the government to force the farmer to remove the baboons from the area. We’ve been complaining about these baboons to the farmer with no luck,” said Bhekifa.
Seluleko’s mum, Khonzeni Xaba (30) was at work when the incident happened. She said she nearly collapsed when she saw her son’s deep wounds.
Premier Senzo Mchunu was shocked when he visited Seluleko at hospital yesterday. The premier has called on the Human Rights Commission to investigate the matter as soon as possible.
Farm owner David Andesgaard said he had sent his anti-poaching security guards to protect the families.
