MUTARE: A Chimanimani teenage mother was Thursday caged for 18 months after she poisoned her two months old baby for an unknown reason.
Fungai Kufakunesu, 18, of Chieza village, appeared before Mutare magistrate Sekai Chiwundura facing charges of infanticide.
Kufakunesu, will however, spend 12 months in prison after Chiwundura suspended six months on good behavior.
She was convicted on her own plea of guilty.
In passing the sentence, Chiwundura said such cases were on the increase in the province and a custodial sentence was appropriate to warn would be offenders.
She said people should value human life.
Prosecutor Shepherd Chavarika told the court that on June 10, Kufakunesu was alone at home at around 1630 hrs when she deliberately fed her baby with a chemical poison.
Kufakunesu’s mother, Patience, noticed that her grandson was having difficulties in breathing at around 18 00hrs.
Patience interrogated Kufakunesu about what had transpired but she failed to give her a satisfactory answer.
Patience rushed the baby to Mutambara Mission hospital and unfortunately the baby died on the following morning.
A medical report indicated that the baby died from poisoning.
Kufakunesu was arrested and interrogated by police and later she spilled the beans, admitting that she, indeed, had poisoned the minor.
